The research is about a distinction between two major models of liberalism, Classic and Socialist. Through an analysis of their origins, ends and fears of their defenders we will be able to differentiate in a concrete and precise manner one from the other. The method is the hypothetical-deductive and we make use of bibliographical analysis to develop the rationalities and build the historical contexts. We mean to give precision to the word liberalism with the end of clarifying its use in electoral debates and as an element of party symbolism, very common in Brazil. In an electoral environment so uninformative, an article that means to solidify the political bases justifies its making in itself. We conclude in a way as to distinguish the two doctrines through the kind of liberty their theories of State endorse, being respectively negative or positive.
