History of Academic Philosophy in Amazonas: from the political Project to teacher training

Abstract

This article analyzes the establishment of the undergraduate Philosophy program in the state of Amazonas, which began in the late 1950s, within the broader context of the sociopolitical landscape and the institutionalization of Philosophy in Brazilian universities. The creation of the program in Manaus is linked to the founding of the Faculty of Philosophy, formally established by Law No. 71 on December 28, 1958, marking the official beginning of university-level philosophical activity in the state. Drawing on documentary sources and personal accounts, the study examines the program's operational dynamics, the challenges faced during its early decades, and the autobiographical elements of pioneering professors. It emphasizes the material and intellectual obstacles to fostering philosophical thought in the Amazonian academic environment. The article contributes to the historical understanding of Philosophy’s presence in northern Brazil, highlighting its role in teacher training and in shaping academic thought with both regional and national impact.
