The central purpose of the article is to problematize the issue of luxury through of two thinkers who are generally little considered in debates on the subject: Rousseau and Schopenhauer. To this end, we first offer historical and contextual considerations, then map the category of luxury in the writings of Rousseau and Schopenhauer, and finally analyze the content and scope of their critiques. These considerations address both the place of the critique of luxury alongside more familiar categories in the thought of the two philosophers – inequality in Rousseau and suffering in Schopenhauer – and a position that unites them: insofar as critiques of socioeconomic implications are not counterbalanced by an economic-political proposal to abolish the system that enables its evils and sufferings, remains as ethical-social denunciation.
